In response to industry demands and changing trends, 23 new postgraduate programmes and six (6) undergraduate programmes have been introduced. The courses will run during the 2018/2019 academic year according to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, who made this known to Members of Convocation in his maiden state of the University Address.
Professor Obiri-Danso listed some of the newly introduced master’s programmes as Aviation Management, Occupational Health and Safety Management, Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs among others.
Other new undergraduate programmes include Bachelor of Science in Automobile Management, Marine Engineering, Railway Engineering, and Medical Imaging, Physiotherapy and Sports and Exercise Science among others.
Reporting further on academic issues, the VC announced that students can now repeat their class for a second time with a dispensation also given to students withdrawn after repeating their programmes to repeat the second time.
On student support, he stated that, the Counselling Unit of the University has been restructured to be more responsive to both staff and students needs to prevent psychological situations from escalating. The move has also seen Counsellors being represented in all the Colleges of the University.
On transportation, the Vice-Chancellor indicated that the University has purchased 4 new Neoplan buses to facilitate students’ mobility in and around the immediate environs of the University. This, according to him has been supported by UniBank with the construction of thirteen (13) Bus Stops.
On promotion of staff, he stated that 204 senior members have been promoted while 546 junior and senior staff have also been promoted. He also revealed that the reviewed University statutes, was almost ready for Academic Board’s consideration for Council’s approval.
On rebranding, he indicated the need for every institution to have a strong corporate identity for which reason, multipurpose identity cards had been issued to staff and students with the support of UniBank Ghana Limited. Additionally, he mentioned the introduction of redesigned and standardized complimentary cards, letterheads, Scarves, Neckties and PowerPoint template for University business.
He commended the Department of Geomatic Engineering and the Department of Communication Design for designing and displaying the University campus map.
On resource mobilisation, he commended his predecessor for instituting the KNUST Foundation to mobilise resources to augment government subvention in running the operations of the University. He continued that the fund which started with ₵1,260,000 currently has ₵2,746,272.05 and commended Members of Convocation for donating ₵103,900 to the Foundation.
